First CIMIN in Rome under the Italian Presidency 2016

The first CIMIN under the Italian Presidency took place in Rome on 6-7 June 2016, with a participation to the Carabinieri 202nd Carabinieri Corps foundation anniversary in “Salvo D’Acquisto” barracks and a formal meeting at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International cooperation.

The CIMIN representatives were welcomed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International cooperation, by the Minister of Defence, by the Defence Chief of Staff, by the Carabinieri Commanding General, Lt. General Tullio DEL SETTE and the Ambassador Luca Giansanti.

The Member States representatives reviewed the key EUROGENDFOR activities over the last 6 months, including the strengthening of the cooperation with relevant international organizations, EU, UN and OSCE, the building of relationships with the EUROCORPS, and the increasing involvement of the Permanent Headquarter in crisis management planning and support works.

Focus of discussions and decisions was on current and future operational, training and advising activities in support of the EU Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) and wider Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), including the possibility to implement EU funded project in support of gendarmeries and other security forces in crisis areas.

Furthermore, the CIMIN decided to develop his support to UN Police activities and deployments, and in particular to consider the involvement of EUROGENDFOR in “UN Serious and Organised Crime Teams” in police missions.

Additionally, and considering the current EU security situation, Member States supported the idea to study how EUROGENDFOR could contribute to the EU external borders security.

The CIMIN President concluded the meeting by emphasizing the key role of gendarmeries and police forces with military status within crisis management operations.

At the meetings participated 48 delegates coming from Italy, France, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, Lithuania and European Union.
