On 13 May 1844, it was promulgated the Royal Decree which gave shape to a new Corps, the Guardia Civil, marking the historic moment of the official creation of this armed institution. The Guardia Civil became the first law enforcement agency that served as an integral police force in Spain, playing a key role, then and today, as a backbone element of the State, in addition to holding full police competences nationwide since its very foundation.
