EUCAP Sahel Niger
From 2012 to 01/07/2024

The European Union Capacity Building Mission (EUCAP) in Sahel Niger was a civilian capacity-building mission established in 2012. Its overall aim was to strengthen Niger’s internal security sector and its capacity to combat significant security threats. In 2017, the Nigerien police requested that the mission set up a Mobile Company for Border Control (CMCF). In 2019, the project was financed by Germany and the Netherlands under EUCAP Sahel Niger.
EUROGENDFOR supported the project’s implementation through the Permanent Headquarters (PHQ). The PHQ coordinated the CMCF Border Module by running pre-deployment training on its premises, sharing relevant information and facilitating logistics and trainer deployment. EUROGENDFOR experts participated in the multinational team responsible for delivering training activities on the ground. Furthermore, one PHQ member was deployed to Niger to provide training support. Since its opening in 2012, EUCAP Sahel Niger supported the Niger Internal Security Forces, national authorities as well as non-state actors with a variety of different programs and activities. The mandate was extended for 2 years until 30 September 2024.
On 4 December 2023, the ruling junta denounced the SOMA between Niger and the EU giving the mission 6 months to leave the country. The mission was closed on 4 June 2024.
