EUMM Georgia (2023-ongoing)

EUMM Georgia

From 15/09/2023 to ongoing

EUMM Georgia is a civilian mission of the European Union (EU), established in September 2008, as a way of monitoring compliance with the six-point agreement, mediated by the EU, which put an end to the armed conflict between Georgia and the Russian Federation.

The Mission’s priorities are to ensure the non-return to hostilities, to facilitate the existence of a safe and normal life for local communities living on both sides of the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL). Another aim is to build trust between the parties in conflict as well as provide Brussels with reliable, first-hand information to EU Member States. The Mission, with headquarters in Tbilisi and Field Offices in Gori, Mtskheta and Zugdidi, has a valid mandate to operate throughout the territory of Georgia, however, so far, the “de facto” authorities in Abkhazia and South Ossetia have not allowed access to these territories.

Since the implementation of the Mission, monitors from the various EU Member States have constantly monitored the areas adjacent to the ABLs with Abkhazia (ABK) and South Ossetia (SO), observing and reporting developments around the impacts of territorial separation caused by the ABLs. The Gori Field Office is in charge of an operating area of approximately 260 km of ABL (of a total of 391 Km) with South Ossetia and the Mtskheta Field Office has an operating area of approximately 130 km of ABL with the same region. The Zugdidi Field Office is responsible for covering the entire ABL with Abkhazia, a total of 148 km.

EUROGENDFOR assets perform a sheer number of activities such as: conducting daily patrols along the ABL and the crossing point, assuring watchkeeper and Operational Officer activities as well as training image intelligence programs with specialists from EU SATCEN, among others.
