1945-2025 THE MEMORY LIVES ON

Today, May 8th,  across all of France -mainland and overseas- gendarmes take part in ceremonies commemorating the Allied victory over Nazi regime in 1945 and the end of World War II in Europe.

More than just a historical milestone, May 8 is a day of remembrance. We honour the bravery of those who fought for peace and freedom, and we remember the millions of lives lost in one of the darkest chapters of our shared history. A day to honour the memory of the millions who never came home.

The bleuet de France (“cornflower”), worn proudly on this day, symbolizes our nation’s enduring gratitude and solidarity with all victims of war and those who serve.
