This year we celebrate 224 years of tradition!
The Royal Police Guard, origin of the Portuguese Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR), was founded on 10 December 1801. Lieutenant Colonel Jean Victor, Count of Novion, was appointed Commander of the Royal Police Guard of Lisbon (created on the same date). The date of December 10 aims to affirm the foundation and creation of the Royal Police Guard as the origin of a force of a military nature “to ensure the maintenance of order and public tranquillity,” of which the GNR is the legitimate heir.
Through the observance of this day we honour with special emphasis the servicemen who, unfortunately, lost their lives in the line of duty. Those who dedicated part of their lives to serving in the Guard and have since left active service, and, finally, those who have joined the ranks of the Guard during the current year.
